From There to Here

I watched the game with the guys at Champions last night, which was good, because I didn’t have to listen to Tim McCarver or Joe Buck announce the game. They’re better than the TBS guys (especially Jose Mota), but this in the top of the fourth really made me cringe.

“There’s Daisuke Matsuzaka in the bullpen… oh… wait… that’s Hideki… umm… yeah, that’s Hideki Okajima?” - McCarver

Joe Buck is stunned silence.

“Yeah, that’s Okajima” - McCarver

“He, uhh, must have uhh, been in the shadows of that dugout and uh, his face was hidden.” - Buck, trying to cover, but the only reason McCarver identified him as Dice-K was clearly because he could see his face…

Wow. Just unbelievable. That’s the kind of stuff I’ve come to expect from TBS announcers, but McCarver has actually DONE games during the season. Yes, both Dice-K and Okajima are Japanese, but they really don’t look anything alike. Unless, like McCarver, you’re absolutely offensive.
